Summary
The Prophet built a movement that changed the world. This khutbah examines his leadership principles and how they apply today.
Part One — First Khutbah
Opening — Khutbat al-Hajah
Man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah.
Amma ba'd. Fa inna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khayral hadyi hadyu Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa sharral umuri muhdathatuha, wa kulla muhdathatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dalalah, wa kulla dalalatin fin-nar.
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,
From One Man to a Global Ummah
Brothers and sisters, the Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, did not just deliver a message — he built a movement. He took a handful of oppressed individuals in Makkah and, within 23 years, established a community that would become the greatest civilisation in human history.
How? What leadership principles did he follow? And what can we learn for our work today?
Leadership Principles from the Seerah
1. Vision and clarity. The Prophet had absolute clarity about his mission. From day one, the message was:
"Say: La ilaha illallah — and you will succeed." (Musnad Ahmad, 16603)
One message. No ambiguity. No confusion. Every successful movement needs a clear, compelling vision.
2. Investing in people. The Prophet invested deeply in the development of his Companions. He didn't just preach to crowds — he mentored individuals. He identified the strengths of each person and placed them where they could contribute most: Abu Bakr for counsel, 'Umar for governance, Khalid for military strategy, Bilal for the adhan.
3. Shura — consultation. Despite being a Prophet receiving revelation, he consulted his Companions on worldly matters. Before the Battle of Badr, he consulted on the campsite. Before the Battle of Uhud, he followed the majority opinion even though it differed from his own. Allah commanded:
"Wa shawirhum fil-amr." (Aal 'Imran, 3:159)
"And consult them in the matter."
A leader who doesn't consult is a dictator — and Islam has no place for dictatorship.
4. Leading from the front. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, never asked his followers to do what he wouldn't do himself. When the trench was being dug before the Battle of the Trench, he dug alongside them, carrying rocks until his stomach was tied with stones from hunger. (Sahih al-Bukhari, 4101)
5. Inclusiveness. He included the young, the old, women, converts, and former enemies. After the conquest of Makkah, he appointed former opponents to positions of responsibility. He gave people a stake in the movement.
6. Long-term thinking. He planted seeds he knew he might not see bloom. He told his Companions about the future expansion of Islam, the conquests of Persia and Rome, and the trials ahead. He was building for generations, not for headlines.
"And We have already written in the Psalms, after the mention, that the earth will be inherited by My righteous servants." (Al-Anbiya, 21:105)
Aqulu qauli hada, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum wa li sa'iril muslimeen, fas taghfiruh, innahu huwal Ghafurur Rahim.
Part Two — Second Khutbah
Bismillah, wal hamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.
Brothers and sisters,
Your Takeaway — Two Actions This Week
First: If you are in any leadership position — at work, in your family, at the masjid — ask yourself: am I leading like the Prophet? Am I consulting others? Am I leading from the front? Am I developing those around me?
Second: Support an Islamic organisation this week — not just with money, but with your time and skills. Movements are not built by individuals. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"Whoever introduces a good practice in Islam will have its reward and the reward of everyone who acts upon it." (Sahih Muslim, 1017)
Be a movement builder — not a spectator.
Closing Du'a
Allahumma a'izzal islama wal muslimeen.
Allahumma irham al-muslimeena fee kulli makaan.
Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.
Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba'da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab.
Aqimis-salah.
