Summary
Loving the Prophet is not optional — it is a pillar of our faith. But true love means following him, not just celebrating him.
Part One — First Khutbah
Opening — Khutbat al-Hajah
Man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah.
Amma ba'd. Fa inna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khayral hadyi hadyu Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa sharral umuri muhdathatuha, wa kulla muhdathatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dalalah, wa kulla dalalatin fin-nar.
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,
Love That is a Condition of Faith
Brothers and sisters, loving the Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is not a nice sentiment — it is a condition of faith. Without it, our iman is incomplete.
The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"La yu'minu ahadukum hatta akuna ahabba ilayhi min walidihi wa waladihi wan-nasi ajma'een." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 15; Sahih Muslim, 44)
"None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all of mankind."
'Umar ibn al-Khattab, radhiAllahu 'anhu, once said to the Prophet: "O Messenger of Allah, you are more beloved to me than everything except my own self." The Prophet replied:
"No, O 'Umar, until I am more beloved to you than your own self." 'Umar then said: "Now, by Allah, you are more beloved to me than my own self." The Prophet said: "Now, O 'Umar (you have complete faith)." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 6632)
What Does True Love Look Like?
True love for the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is not merely emotional. It manifests in action:
1. Following his Sunnah. Allah makes this clear:
"Qul in kuntum tuhibbunallaha fattabi'uni yuhbibkumullah." (Aal 'Imran, 3:31)
"Say: If you love Allah, then follow me, and Allah will love you."
Love without obedience is just a claim.
2. Sending salawat upon him. Allah Himself sends salutations upon the Prophet:
(Al-Ahzab, 33:56)
The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said: "Whoever sends one salutation upon me, Allah sends ten upon him." (Sahih Muslim, 408)
3. Defending his honour — with wisdom, not violence. With knowledge, not ignorance.
4. Teaching his Seerah to our children and communities — so they know who he was, not just his name.
Beware of Extreme Claims of Love
We must also warn against those who claim to love the Prophet but do so in ways he never taught — inventing new acts of worship, making du'a to him instead of Allah, or celebrating him in ways that involve shirk or bid'ah. True love is defined by his teachings, not by our emotions.
The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"Do not exaggerate about me as the Christians exaggerated about the son of Maryam. I am only a servant, so say: the servant of Allah and His Messenger." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 3445)
Aqulu qauli hada, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum wa li sa'iril muslimeen, fas taghfiruh, innahu huwal Ghafurur Rahim.
Part Two — Second Khutbah
Bismillah, wal hamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.
Brothers and sisters,
Your Takeaway — Two Actions This Week
First: Make it a habit to send salawat upon the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, at least 100 times today — especially on this blessed day of Jumu'ah. He said:
"Increase your salawat upon me on the day of Jumu'ah." (Sunan Abu Dawud, 1047; Sunan an-Nasa'i, 1374 — graded Sahih by al-Albani)
Second: Revive one Sunnah in your daily life that you have been neglecting — eating with the right hand, saying bismillah before meals, praying the Sunnah prayers, sleeping on the right side with the du'a. Love is shown through action, not just words.
Closing Du'a
Allahumma a'izzal islama wal muslimeen.
Allahumma irham al-muslimeena fee kulli makaan.
Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.
Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba'da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab.
Aqimis-salah.
