Prophet as an Example for Positive Change

"Ya ayyuhalladheena amanut-taqullaha haqqa tuqatihi wa la tamutunna illa wa antum muslimun." (Aal 'Imran, 3:102)

"Ya ayyuhannas uttaqu rabbakumul ladhi khalaqakum min nafsin wahidatin wa khalaqa minha zawjaha wa baththa minhuma rijalan katheeran wa nisa'a. Wattaqullahalldhee tasa'aluna bihi wal-arham. Innallaha kana 'alaykum raqeeba." (An-Nisa, 4:1)

Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,

Brothers and sisters, in 23 years, the Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, transformed a society drowning in ignorance, tribalism, and injustice into the most just civilisation the world had ever seen. No political revolution, no military conquest, no social movement in history has achieved what he achieved — and it began with one man, one message, and complete trust in Allah.

How did he do it? What was his methodology? Understanding this is essential for us — because we too are called to be agents of positive change.

1. Start with the individual. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, began in Makkah by calling individuals — one person at a time. Abu Bakr, Khadijah, 'Ali, Zayd. He built faith in hearts before he built institutions. Change begins inside, then moves outward.

"Innallaha la yughayyiru ma bi qawmin hatta yughayyiru ma bi anfusihim." (Ar-Ra'd, 13:11)

2. Gradual implementation. Alcohol was not banned overnight — it was prohibited in stages over several years. The Quran first noted its harm, then restricted prayer while intoxicated, then finally prohibited it entirely. The Prophet understood that lasting change is gradual.

3. Build a community. He did not work alone. He built a jama'ah — a community of believers who supported each other, held each other accountable, and worked towards a shared vision. The Companions were not just followers — they were partners in the mission.

4. Engage with society — don't withdraw from it. In Madinah, the Prophet engaged with Jews, Christians, and polytheists. He made alliances, negotiated treaties, and participated in the social life of the city. He did not isolate his community — he integrated them while maintaining their distinct identity.

5. Patience and perseverance. For 13 years in Makkah, the Prophet faced rejection, abuse, boycott, and assassination attempts. He did not resort to violence, did not compromise his principles, and did not give up. He trusted Allah's timeline.

"Fasbir inna wa'dallahi haqqun wa la yastakhiffannakal-ladheena la yuqinun." (Ar-Rum, 30:60)

Brothers and sisters,

First: Identify one positive change you want to see in your community — and take one concrete step towards it this week. Don't wait for someone else. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, didn't wait for conditions to be perfect — he started with what he had.

Second: Be patient with the pace of change. Real transformation takes time. The Prophet worked for 23 years. We want results in 23 days. Commit to a long-term vision and stay the course, even when progress feels slow.

"By time. Indeed mankind is in loss. Except those who believe, do righteous deeds, advise each other to truth, and advise each other to patience." (Al-'Asr, 103:1-3)

Faith, action, truth, and patience — this is the formula the Prophet lived by and the formula we must live by.
