Summary
How do we live the Prophetic character in 21st century Britain? This khutbah makes the Sunnah practical and relevant.
Part One — First Khutbah
Opening — Khutbat al-Hajah
Man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah.
Amma ba'd. Fa inna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khayral hadyi hadyu Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa sharral umuri muhdathatuha, wa kulla muhdathatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dalalah, wa kulla dalalatin fin-nar.
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,
The Sunnah is Not Just Rituals
Brothers and sisters, when we hear "following the Sunnah," many of us think of the beard, the miswak, the way we eat. These are Sunnah — but the Sunnah is far broader. It is the entire way the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, lived — how he dealt with people, how he handled conflict, how he conducted business, how he treated strangers.
Allah described his character:
"Wa innaka la 'ala khuluqin 'adheem." (Al-Qalam, 68:4)
"And indeed, you are of a great moral character."
'A'ishah, radhiAllahu 'anha, was asked about his character and she said:
"Kana khuluquhul-Qur'an." (Sahih Muslim, 746)
"His character was the Quran."
He was the Quran walking among people. And we are called to embody the same — in 21st century Britain.
Prophetic Character in Everyday Life
At work: The Prophet was known for his honesty in trade. In modern Britain, this means no cutting corners, no lying on CVs, no fraudulent claims, no overcharging. It means being the colleague people trust.
With neighbours: He said: "Jibreel kept advising me about the neighbour until I thought he would make him an heir." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 6014; Sahih Muslim, 2625) In Britain, this means knocking on your neighbour's door, checking on the elderly person across the street, bringing food when someone is ill — regardless of their faith.
In disagreement: He never raised his voice in personal arguments. 'A'ishah, radhiAllahu 'anha, said: "He was never given a choice between two things except that he chose the easier of the two, as long as it was not sinful." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 3560; Sahih Muslim, 2327) In Britain, this means choosing grace over confrontation, patience over outrage, dialogue over shouting.
Online: Though the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, did not have social media, the principles apply. He said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 6018; Sahih Muslim, 47) How many of us violate this hadith daily on WhatsApp, Twitter, and Facebook?
In hardship: When he lost his son Ibrahim, he wept — but he said: "The eyes shed tears, the heart is grieved, and we say nothing except what pleases our Lord." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 1303; Sahih Muslim, 2315) In Britain, where many Muslims face discrimination, financial pressure, or family breakdown — this is our model: feel the pain, but respond with dignity.
Aqulu qauli hada, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum wa li sa'iril muslimeen, fas taghfiruh, innahu huwal Ghafurur Rahim.
Part Two — Second Khutbah
Bismillah, wal hamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.
Brothers and sisters,
Your Takeaway — Two Actions This Week
First: Pick one Sunnah of character — not ritual — to practise this week. Perhaps it is smiling more, being the first to greet, holding the door, or complimenting someone sincerely. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"Your smiling in the face of your brother is a charity." (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 1956 — graded Sahih by al-Albani)
Second: Reflect on how you behave when no one from the Muslim community is watching — at work, in traffic, at the supermarket. Is your conduct Prophetic? The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, was the same person in private as he was in public. That consistency is the ultimate goal.
"Laqad kana lakum fee Rasulillahi uswatun hasanah." (Al-Ahzab, 33:21)
"There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example."
Closing Du'a
Allahumma a'izzal islama wal muslimeen.
Allahumma irham al-muslimeena fee kulli makaan.
Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.
Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba'da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab.
Aqimis-salah.
