Summary
As Muslims living in the West, we carry a unique responsibility — to be witnesses unto mankind. This khutbah explores how to balance our Islamic identity with active, positive citizenship.
Part One — First Khutbah
Opening — Khutbat al-Hajah
Man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah.
Amma ba'd. Fa inna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khayral hadyi hadyu Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa sharral umuri muhdathatuha, wa kulla muhdathatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dalalah, wa kulla dalalatin fin-nar.
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,
Witnesses Unto Mankind
Brothers and sisters, we live in a unique time and place. We are Muslims living in Britain, in the West — a land that is not historically Muslim, yet a land where millions of Muslims now call home. This is not an accident. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, placed us here for a reason.
Allah says in the Quran:
"Wa kadhalika ja'alnakum ummatan wasatal-li takunu shuhada'a 'alan-nasi wa yakunar-rasulu 'alaykum shahida." (Al-Baqarah, 2:143)
"And thus We have made you a middle nation, that you may be witnesses over the people, and the Messenger may be a witness over you."
We are an ummah of the middle path — not extreme in either direction. And we are to be witnesses — not hidden, not silent, not isolated — but visible, active, and present in the society around us.
What Does "Witness" Mean?
Being a witness means three things:
1. Living by example. People watch us. Our neighbours, colleagues, classmates — they form their opinion of Islam through us, not through books or media. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
(Sahih Muslim, 2564)
"Indeed Allah does not look at your appearances or your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds."
2. Standing for justice. We must speak up against oppression, corruption, and injustice — even when it is inconvenient.
"Ya ayyuhalladheena amanu kunu qawwameena bil-qisti shuhada'a lillahi wa law 'ala anfusikum." (An-Nisa, 4:135)
"O you who believe, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves."
3. Contributing positively. We must not be parasites in this society — taking benefits but giving nothing back. Islam teaches us to be beneficial wherever we are. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"Khayrun-nasi anfa'uhum lin-nas." (Al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, at-Tabarani, 5787 — graded Hasan by al-Albani)
"The best of people are those most beneficial to people."
This means volunteering in our communities, supporting local causes, engaging with our neighbours, and being known as people of goodness — not people of isolation or suspicion.
Avoiding Two Extremes
There are two dangerous extremes some Muslims fall into:
The first is complete assimilation — losing our Islamic identity, abandoning our values, and becoming indistinguishable from the society around us. This is not what Allah asks of us.
The second is complete isolation — cutting ourselves off from society, refusing to engage, viewing everyone as the enemy. This too is contrary to the Sunnah.
The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, lived in Madinah alongside Jews, Christians, and polytheists. He made treaties with them, traded with them, visited their sick, and dealt with them with justice and fairness. He was not isolated — he was engaged, but on his own terms, with his principles intact.
Aqulu qauli hada, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum wa li sa'iril muslimeen, fas taghfiruh, innahu huwal Ghafurur Rahim.
Part Two — Second Khutbah
Bismillah, wal hamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.
Brothers and sisters,
Your Takeaway — Two Actions This Week
First: Make a conscious effort to greet and engage with your non-Muslim neighbours this week. A simple salaam, a smile, an offer of help — this is dawah in action. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread the salaam amongst yourselves." (Sahih Muslim, 54)
Second: Identify one way you can contribute positively to your local community — whether it is a food bank, a neighbourhood clean-up, a school event, or simply being available when someone needs help. Be known as someone who gives, not just someone who takes.
We are not here by accident. Allah placed us in this land as His witnesses. Let us fulfil that trust with excellence.
Closing Du'a
Allahumma a'izzal islama wal muslimeen.
Allahumma irham al-muslimeena fee kulli makaan.
Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.
Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba'da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab.
Aqimis-salah.
