Summary
Islam is not just a religion of rituals — it is a complete system for life covering worship, ethics, economics, governance, family, and society.
Part One — First Khutbah
Opening — Khutbat al-Hajah
Man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah.
Amma ba'd. Fa inna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khayral hadyi hadyu Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa sharral umuri muhdathatuha, wa kulla muhdathatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dalalah, wa kulla dalalatin fin-nar.
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,
Islam is Not Just a Religion — It is a Deen
Brothers and sisters, one of the greatest misunderstandings about Islam — even among Muslims — is reducing it to a set of rituals. We pray, we fast, we give zakah, we go for Hajj — and we think we have fulfilled Islam.
But Islam is not merely a religion in the Western sense of the word — a private matter between you and God, confined to the mosque or the prayer mat. Islam is a deen — a complete way of life, a comprehensive system that covers every aspect of human existence.
Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, declares:
"This day I have perfected for you your religion, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion."
Perfected. Complete. Not partial, not lacking, not in need of supplementation from any other ideology.
What Does "Complete" Mean?
Islam provides guidance in:
1. Our relationship with Allah — through prayer, fasting, remembrance, and trust in Him in all circumstances.
2. Our relationship with ourselves — Islam teaches us how to eat, sleep, dress, maintain our health, manage our emotions, and purify our souls.
3. Our relationship with others — family rights, spousal rights, children's rights, neighbours' rights, the rights of the poor, the rights of animals, the rights of the environment.
4. Our relationship with society — justice, governance, economics, education, welfare, conflict resolution.
There is no sphere of life where Islam says: "This is not My domain." Allah says:
"Wa nazzalna 'alaykal-kitaba tibyaanal-li kulli shay'in wa hudaw wa rahmatan wa bushra lil-muslimeen." (An-Nahl, 16:89)
"And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things, and as guidance, mercy, and good tidings for the Muslims."
The Danger of a Partial Islam
The danger today is that many of us have accepted a partial Islam. We pray but we cheat in business. We fast but we backbite. We wear the hijab but we consume riba (interest). We attend the masjid but we ignore injustice in our communities.
Allah warned against this:
"Afa tu'minoona bi ba'dil-kitabi wa takfuroona bi ba'd." (Al-Baqarah, 2:85)
"Do you believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part?"
Islam must be taken as a whole. You cannot pick and choose.
"Ya ayyuhalladheena amanud-khulu fis-silmi kaffah." (Al-Baqarah, 2:208)
"O you who believe, enter into Islam completely."
This does not mean perfection — it means intention and effort. It means striving to align every part of our lives with the guidance of Allah. Our finances, our entertainment, our careers, our relationships, our ambitions — all of it must pass through the filter of "Is this pleasing to Allah?"
Aqulu qauli hada, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum wa li sa'iril muslimeen, fas taghfiruh, innahu huwal Ghafurur Rahim.
Part Two — Second Khutbah
Bismillah, wal hamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.
Brothers and sisters,
Your Takeaway — Two Actions This Week
First: Identify one area of your life that you have not yet aligned with Islam. Perhaps it is your finances — are you involved in riba? Perhaps it is your entertainment — what are you watching and listening to? Perhaps it is your workplace conduct. Pick one area and take a concrete step to bring it in line with Islamic guidance.
Second: Spend 15 minutes this week reading about an aspect of Islam you do not usually think about — Islamic economics, social justice, environmental stewardship, or community building. Islam has something to say about all of these, and we owe it to ourselves to learn.
The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"Man yuridillahu bihi khayran yufaqqihhu fid-deen." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 71; Sahih Muslim, 1037)
"Whoever Allah intends good for, He gives him understanding of the religion."
Let us seek that understanding — not just of the rituals, but of the entire deen.
Closing Du'a
Allahumma a'izzal islama wal muslimeen.
Allahumma irham al-muslimeena fee kulli makaan.
Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.
Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba'da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab.
Aqimis-salah.
