Summary
Good character is the heaviest thing on the scales. This khutbah explores how faith must manifest in our daily interactions and behaviour.
Part One — First Khutbah
Opening — Khutbat al-Hajah
Man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah.
Amma ba'd. Fa inna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khayral hadyi hadyu Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa sharral umuri muhdathatuha, wa kulla muhdathatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dalalah, wa kulla dalalatin fin-nar.
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,
The Weight of Good Character
Brothers and sisters, if you were to ask what is the single most important thing after tawheed and the five pillars — what would it be? Many of us would say extra prayers, or extra fasting, or memorising more Quran. But the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, gave a surprising answer:
"Ma min shay'in athqalu fil-meezani min husnil-khuluq." (Sunan Abu Dawud, 4799 — graded Sahih by al-Albani)
"There is nothing heavier on the scales than good character."
And in another narration:
"Inna min ahabbi kum ilayya wa aqrabikum minni majlisan yawmal-qiyamati ahasinukum akhlaqan." (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 2018 — graded Sahih by al-Albani)
"The most beloved of you to me and the closest to me in position on the Day of Judgement are those with the best character."
SubhanAllah — the closest to the Prophet on the Day of Judgement. Not the one with the longest beard, not the one who fasted the most — but the one with the best character.
What is "Good Character"?
Good character — husn al-khuluq — is not simply being polite. It is a comprehensive way of being that includes:
Truthfulness — even when it is difficult. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"'Alaykum bis-sidq, fa innas-sidqa yahdee ilal-birr, wa innal-birra yahdee ilal-jannah." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 6094; Sahih Muslim, 2607)
"Be truthful, for truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise."
Patience — with people, with circumstances, with life's difficulties.
Generosity — not just with money, but with time, with attention, with forgiveness.
Humility — recognising that everything we have is from Allah, and no one is inherently better than another.
Justice — treating everyone fairly, regardless of whether they are friend or foe, Muslim or non-Muslim.
Faith Without Character is Empty
Brothers and sisters, we must understand that faith without character is incomplete. A person who prays five times a day but lies, cheats, and mistreats others has not understood Islam.
The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, was once told about a woman who prayed and fasted abundantly but harmed her neighbours with her tongue. He said:
"Hiya fin-nar." (Musnad Ahmad, 9673 — graded Sahih by al-Albani in Silsilah as-Sahihah, 190)
"She is in the Fire."
And when told of another woman who only prayed the obligatory prayers and gave small amounts of charity but never harmed anyone, he said:
"Hiya fil-jannah."
"She is in Paradise."
This is a profound lesson. Our akhlaq — our character — is not secondary to our worship. It is part of our worship.
Aqulu qauli hada, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum wa li sa'iril muslimeen, fas taghfiruh, innahu huwal Ghafurur Rahim.
Part Two — Second Khutbah
Bismillah, wal hamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.
Brothers and sisters,
Your Takeaway — Two Actions This Week
First: Choose one aspect of character to consciously work on this week. Perhaps it is controlling your anger. Perhaps it is being more patient with your spouse or children. Perhaps it is being more honest in your dealings. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"Innamal-'ilmu bit-ta'allum, wa innamal-hilmu bit-tahallum." (Al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, at-Tabarani, 929 — graded Hasan by al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami', 2328)
"Indeed knowledge comes by learning, and forbearance comes by practising forbearance."
Character is built deliberately — one choice at a time.
Second: Think of someone you have wronged — even if it was a small thing — and make it right. Apologise, return what is owed, mend the relationship. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, warned us:
"Whoever has wronged his brother in his honour or anything else, let him seek his pardon today — before there will be no dinar and no dirham." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 2449)
Closing Du'a
Allahumma a'izzal islama wal muslimeen.
Allahumma irham al-muslimeena fee kulli makaan.
Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.
Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba'da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab.
Aqimis-salah.
