Summary
The tongue is the most dangerous limb. This khutbah explores how guarding our speech protects our hearts and relationships.
Part One — First Khutbah
Opening — Khutbat al-Hajah
Man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah.
Amma ba'd. Fa inna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khayral hadyi hadyu Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa sharral umuri muhdathatuha, wa kulla muhdathatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dalalah, wa kulla dalalatin fin-nar.
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,
The Most Dangerous Limb
Brothers and sisters, there is a small piece of flesh in our bodies that can either save us or destroy us. It is not the heart — though the heart is important. It is the tongue.
The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"And what topples people into the Hellfire on their faces — or on their noses — except the harvests of their tongues?" (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 2616 — graded Sahih by al-Albani)
The harvests of our tongues. What a terrifying image. Every word we speak is a seed — and on the Day of Judgement, we will harvest what we planted.
Mu'adh ibn Jabal, radhiAllahu 'anhu, asked the Prophet about the deeds that would enter him into Paradise and keep him from the Fire. After listing prayer, fasting, and charity, the Prophet grabbed his tongue and said:
"Kuffa 'alayka hadha." — "Restrain this." (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 2616)
The Sins of the Tongue
What are the diseases of the tongue that Islam warns against?
1. Gheebah (backbiting). Speaking about someone behind their back in a way they would dislike — even if it is true. Allah compares it to eating the flesh of your dead brother:
"Ayuhibbu ahadukum an ya'kula lahma akheehi maytan fa karihtumuh." (Al-Hujurat, 49:12)
"Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it."
2. Nameemah (tale-carrying). Carrying gossip between people to cause fitna. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"La yadkhulul-jannata nammam." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 6056; Sahih Muslim, 105)
"The tale-carrier will not enter Paradise."
3. Lying. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, warned:
"Beware of lying, for lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 6094; Sahih Muslim, 2607)
4. Harsh and hurtful speech. Mocking people, insulting them, calling them by offensive nicknames — all prohibited:
"Ya ayyuhalladheena amanu la yaskhar qawmun min qawmin 'asa an yakunu khayran minhum." (Al-Hujurat, 49:11)
"O you who believe, let not a people ridicule another people — perhaps they may be better than them."
The Connection to the Heart
Brothers and sisters, the tongue is a window to the heart. What comes out of our mouths reveals what is inside us. If our hearts are full of jealousy, suspicion, and arrogance — that is what our tongues will produce. Purify the heart, and the tongue follows.
The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"A servant's faith will not be upright until his heart is upright, and his heart will not be upright until his tongue is upright." (Musnad Ahmad, 13048 — graded Hasan by al-Mundhiri)
Aqulu qauli hada, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum wa li sa'iril muslimeen, fas taghfiruh, innahu huwal Ghafurur Rahim.
Part Two — Second Khutbah
Bismillah, wal hamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.
Brothers and sisters,
Your Takeaway — Two Actions This Week
First: For the next seven days, monitor your speech carefully. Before you say anything about someone, ask yourself: "Would I say this if they were standing in front of me?" If the answer is no, don't say it. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 6018; Sahih Muslim, 47)
This is one of the simplest yet most powerful rules in Islam. Speak good — or stay quiet.
Second: If you have wronged someone with your tongue — through backbiting, a harsh word, or a lie — seek their forgiveness this week. Don't wait. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, warned that on the Day of Judgement, your good deeds will be transferred to the person you wronged if you don't make amends in this life. (Sahih Muslim, 2581)
Guard your tongue. It is the steering wheel of your life — it can take you to Jannah or drive you into Jahannam.
"Ma yalfidhu min qawlin illa ladayhi raqeebun 'ateed." (Qaf, 50:18)
"He does not utter a single word except that there is a watcher by him, ready."
Closing Du'a
Allahumma a'izzal islama wal muslimeen.
Allahumma irham al-muslimeena fee kulli makaan.
Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.
Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba'da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab.
Aqimis-salah.
