Summary
Islam values organised, disciplined effort. This khutbah explores why individual piety alone is not enough — we must work together.
Part One — First Khutbah
Opening — Khutbat al-Hajah
Man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah.
Amma ba'd. Fa inna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khayral hadyi hadyu Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa sharral umuri muhdathatuha, wa kulla muhdathatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dalalah, wa kulla dalalatin fin-nar.
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,
Rows of Brick, Not Scattered Sand
Brothers and sisters, Allah does not simply ask us to believe — He asks us to believe and organise. Individual piety is essential, but it is not sufficient. Islam demands collective, disciplined effort.
Allah says:
"Innallaha yuhibbul-ladheena yuqatiloona fee sabeelihi saffan ka'annahum bunyanun marsus." (As-Saff, 61:4)
"Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row, as though they are a solid structure."
Not scattered individuals — a solid structure. Bricks arranged in rows, each one supporting the other, each one in its place. This is the image Allah uses to describe the believers He loves.
The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, reinforced this:
"Al-mu'minu lil-mu'mini kal-bunyani yashuddu ba'duhu ba'da." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 481; Sahih Muslim, 2585)
"The believer to the believer is like a building — each part supports the other." And he interlaced his fingers to demonstrate.
The Sunnah of Organisation
Look at how the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, ran his community. Nothing was left to chaos:
- Salah has an Imam, rows are straightened, movements are synchronised. The Prophet would say before prayer: "Straighten your rows, for straightening the rows is part of establishing the prayer." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 723; Sahih Muslim, 434)
- Hajj has designated days, rituals, and stations — millions moving in coordination.
- Zakah was collected, recorded, and distributed systematically — not randomly.
- The army had commanders, divisions, and strategy. The Prophet appointed leaders for every expedition, even groups of three.
- The state of Madinah had a constitution (the Sahifah), treaties, ambassadors, and governance structures.
Islam is not a religion of good intentions with no follow-through. It is a religion of planned, executed, and evaluated action.
Why We Struggle Today
One of the greatest weaknesses of the Muslim ummah today is our inability to organise effectively. We have no shortage of sincere, practising Muslims. But we are scattered — each one doing their own thing, duplicating effort, wasting resources, and working in silos.
The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"Yadullahi ma'al-jama'ah." (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 2166 — graded Hasan by al-Albani)
"The hand of Allah is with the collective."
Allah's help comes when we work together. When we fragment, we weaken ourselves and invite failure.
And he also instructed:
"If three people go out on a journey, let them appoint one of them as their leader." (Sunan Abu Dawud, 2608 — graded Hasan by al-Albani)
Even three people need a leader. Even a small group needs structure. This is the Prophetic methodology — organisation is not optional.
Aqulu qauli hada, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum wa li sa'iril muslimeen, fas taghfiruh, innahu huwal Ghafurur Rahim.
Part Two — Second Khutbah
Bismillah, wal hamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.
Brothers and sisters,
Your Takeaway — Two Actions This Week
First: If you are part of any Islamic organisation, committee, or volunteer group — evaluate your own discipline within it. Do you attend on time? Do you fulfil your commitments? Do you follow through? Discipline starts with the individual.
The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"Indeed, Allah loves that when one of you does a task, he does it with itqan (excellence and thoroughness)." (Al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman, 4929 — graded Hasan)
Whatever you commit to — do it properly or don't commit at all.
Second: If you are not part of any collective effort, ask yourself why. Join a local Islamic organisation, volunteer at your masjid, support a community initiative. The ummah needs your contribution — not just your prayers, but your skills, your time, and your energy working alongside others.
We cannot change the condition of this ummah as isolated individuals. We must work together — with discipline, with organisation, with shura (consultation), and with trust in Allah.
"Wa ta'awanu 'alal-birri wat-taqwa wa la ta'awanu 'alal-ithmi wal-'udwan." (Al-Ma'idah, 5:2)
"And cooperate in righteousness and piety, and do not cooperate in sin and aggression."
Closing Du'a
Allahumma a'izzal islama wal muslimeen.
Allahumma irham al-muslimeena fee kulli makaan.
Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.
Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba'da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab.
Aqimis-salah.
