Summary

Every soul will be held accountable. This khutbah reminds us to take ourselves to account before we are taken to account.

Part One — First Khutbah

Opening — Khutbat al-Hajah

Man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah.

Amma ba'd. Fa inna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khayral hadyi hadyu Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa sharral umuri muhdathatuha, wa kulla muhdathatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dalalah, wa kulla dalalatin fin-nar.

Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,

A Day When Nothing is Hidden

Brothers and sisters, there will come a Day when every human being who ever lived will stand before Allah — exposed, with nowhere to hide and no one to blame.

(At-Tariq, 86:9-10)
"The Day when secrets will be examined. Then he will have no power or any helper."

On that Day, our secrets — the things we did when no one was watching, the thoughts we harboured, the intentions behind our deeds — all of it will be laid bare.

Allah tells us:

"Yawma'idhin yasdurus-nasu ashtatal-li yuraw a'malahum. Fa man ya'mal mithqala dharratin khayran yarah. Wa man ya'mal mithqala dharratin sharran yarah." (Az-Zalzalah, 99:6-8)
"That Day, people will come forward in scattered groups to be shown their deeds. So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it. And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it."

An atom's weight. Nothing is too small to be recorded. Nothing escapes the accounting of Allah.

The Questions We Will Be Asked

The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, told us what we will be questioned about:

"The feet of a servant will not move on the Day of Judgement until he is asked about: his life — how he spent it; his knowledge — what he did with it; his wealth — where he earned it and how he spent it; and his body — how he used it." (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 2417 — graded Hasan by al-Albani)

Four questions. Time, knowledge, wealth, and body. Every one of us will face these questions. Are we ready?

Take Yourself to Account Now

The wise person does not wait for the Day of Judgement to review their deeds. They do it now — every day, every week.

'Umar ibn al-Khattab, radhiAllahu 'anhu, said: "Take account of yourselves before you are taken to account. Weigh your deeds before they are weighed for you. And prepare for the Greatest Presentation."

And Imam al-Hasan al-Basri, rahimahullah, said: "The believer is a guardian over himself — he takes himself to account for Allah's sake. The reckoning on the Day of Judgement will only be light for those who took themselves to account in this life. And the reckoning will be heavy for those who took this matter lightly."

This is practical. Every night before you sleep, review your day. What did I do well? Where did I fall short? Did I harm anyone? Did I miss a prayer? Did I waste time? This nightly muhasabah is a habit of the righteous.
Aqulu qauli hada, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum wa li sa'iril muslimeen, fas taghfiruh, innahu huwal Ghafurur Rahim.

Part Two — Second Khutbah

Bismillah, wal hamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.

Brothers and sisters,

Your Takeaway — Two Actions This Week

First: Establish a nightly habit of muhasabah. Before you sleep, spend just two minutes reviewing your day. Ask yourself three questions: Did I fulfil my obligations to Allah today? Did I wrong anyone? What can I do better tomorrow? This small practice can transform your life.

The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:

"The wise person is the one who holds himself accountable and works for what comes after death. And the helpless one is the one who follows his desires and then makes empty wishes of Allah." (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 2459 — graded Hasan by al-Albani)

Second: Identify one debt you owe — whether it is a financial debt, an apology, a right you have not fulfilled — and settle it this week. Don't carry it forward. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, told us that the martyr is forgiven everything except debt. (Sahih Muslim, 1886) If debts are that serious, how much more so our other obligations?

Every day that passes is a page of your book that has been sealed. Make sure today's page is one you would be proud to present before Allah.

"And the record will be placed, and you will see the criminals fearful of what is in it. They will say: Woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it?" (Al-Kahf, 18:49)

Closing Du'a

Allahumma a'izzal islama wal muslimeen.

Allahumma irham al-muslimeena fee kulli makaan.

Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.

Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba'da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab.

Aqimis-salah.
