Summary

True taqwa is not how we behave in the masjid — it is how we behave when nobody is watching. This khutbah addresses private righteousness.

Part One — First Khutbah

Opening — Khutbat al-Hajah

Man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah.

Amma ba'd. Fa inna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khayral hadyi hadyu Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa sharral umuri muhdathatuha, wa kulla muhdathatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dalalah, wa kulla dalalatin fin-nar.

Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,

When Nobody is Watching

Brothers and sisters, it is easy to be righteous in the masjid. It is easy to lower your gaze when people are around. It is easy to speak kindly when others are listening. But what about when you are alone — in your room, behind a locked screen, in a foreign city where nobody knows you?

That is where true taqwa is tested.

The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, gave this powerful advice:

"Ittaqillaha haythuma kunt, wa atbi'is-sayyi'atal-hasanata tamhuha, wa khaliqin-nasa bi khuluqin hasan." (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 1987 — graded Hasan by al-Albani)
"Fear Allah wherever you are, follow a bad deed with a good one and it will erase it, and treat people with good character."

"Wherever you are" — not just in the masjid, not just in Ramadan, not just when people are watching. Wherever. Always.

Allah Sees Everything

The foundation of taqwa in private is knowing — truly knowing — that Allah sees everything:

"Ya'lamu kha'inatal-a'yuni wa ma tukhfis-sudur." (Ghafir, 40:19)
"He knows the treachery of the eyes and what the chests conceal."

The "treachery of the eyes" — the stolen glance, the secret look at something haram, the browsing history you delete. Allah sees it all. Nothing is hidden from Him:

"Alam ya'lam bi annallaha yara." (Al-'Alaq, 96:14)
"Does he not know that Allah sees?"

The Reward of Private Righteousness

The flip side is beautiful — those who maintain their taqwa in private are among the most honoured servants of Allah. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, mentioned among the seven shaded on the Day of Judgement:

"A man who remembered Allah in seclusion and his eyes overflowed with tears." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 1423; Sahih Muslim, 1031)

And:

"A man who was invited by a woman of beauty and status, and he said: I fear Allah." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 1423; Sahih Muslim, 1031)

Both scenarios happen in private. Both are about what you do when no one sees. And both earn a shade on the Day when there is no shade except Allah's.
Aqulu qauli hada, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum wa li sa'iril muslimeen, fas taghfiruh, innahu huwal Ghafurur Rahim.

Part Two — Second Khutbah

Bismillah, wal hamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.

Brothers and sisters,

Your Takeaway — Two Actions This Week

First: Audit your private life. What do you do when you are completely alone — on your phone, on your computer, in your thoughts? If it doesn't match your public persona, that gap is where shaytan lives. Close the gap. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:

"Allah does not look at your appearances or wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds." (Sahih Muslim, 2564)

Second: Establish one private act of worship — a night prayer, a morning adhkar, a du'a that only you and Allah know about. Build your private relationship with Him. That private connection is the foundation of everything else.

The true test of faith is not the masjid — it is the moment you are alone with a choice, and you choose Allah.

Closing Du'a

Allahumma a'izzal islama wal muslimeen.

Allahumma irham al-muslimeena fee kulli makaan.

Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.

Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba'da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab.

Aqimis-salah.
