Accountability Before Allah and the People

"Ya ayyuhalladheena amanut-taqullaha haqqa tuqatihi wa la tamutunna illa wa antum muslimun." (Aal 'Imran, 3:102)

"Ya ayyuhannas uttaqu rabbakumul ladhi khalaqakum min nafsin wahidatin wa khalaqa minha zawjaha wa baththa minhuma rijalan katheeran wa nisa'a. Wattaqullahalldhee tasa'aluna bihi wal-arham. Innallaha kana 'alaykum raqeeba." (An-Nisa, 4:1)

Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,

Brothers and sisters, in Islam, leadership is not a reward — it is a burden. It is not a prize to be sought — it is a responsibility to be feared.

The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:

"There is no servant whom Allah entrusts with the care of subjects who dies while being dishonest to them, except that Allah will forbid him Paradise." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 7150; Sahih Muslim, 142)

This applies to everyone in any position of authority — masjid committees, community leaders, managers, parents, teachers. You are accountable for the people under your care.

When Abu Bakr, radhiAllahu 'anhu, became khalifah, his first speech was: "I have been placed in authority over you, and I am not the best of you. If I do well, help me. If I act wrongly, correct me. Obey me so long as I obey Allah and His Messenger. If I disobey them, you owe me no obedience."

SubhanAllah — the best man after the Prophet, asking to be corrected and conditioning his authority on his obedience to Allah.

'Umar ibn al-Khattab, radhiAllahu 'anhu, would patrol the streets of Madinah at night, checking on people. He once found a woman cooking stones for her hungry children. He carried sacks of flour on his own back from the storehouse and personally cooked for them. When his servant offered to carry the load, 'Umar said: "Will you carry my burden on the Day of Judgement?"

This is Islamic leadership — servant leadership.

Today, many of our community leaders — masjid committees, organisation heads, even family elders — treat their positions as thrones. They don't consult. They don't account for funds. They don't welcome criticism. They stay in power indefinitely. This is not Islamic leadership — it is tyranny wrapped in religious language.

Allah warns:

"Tilkad-darul-akhiratu naj'aluha lilladheena la yureeduna 'uluwwan fil-ardi wa la fasada. Wal-'aqibatu lil-muttaqeen." (Al-Qasas, 28:83)

Brothers and sisters,

First: If you hold any position of responsibility — at work, at the masjid, in your family — ask the people you serve: "Am I fulfilling my duties? How can I do better?" This is the Sunnah of shura and accountability.

Second: Hold your leaders accountable — with respect, but with firmness. If your masjid committee is not transparent, ask questions. If community funds are not accounted for, demand accountability. Silence in the face of mismanagement is complicity.

The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:

"Ad-deenun-naseehah." — "The religion is sincere advice." They asked: "To whom?" He said: "To Allah, His Book, His Messenger, the leaders of the Muslims, and the common people." (Sahih Muslim, 55)
