Summary
Islam does not permit us to be passive bystanders. This khutbah explores our collective duty to improve the society we live in.
Part One — First Khutbah
Opening — Khutbat al-Hajah
Man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah.
Amma ba'd. Fa inna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khayral hadyi hadyu Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa sharral umuri muhdathatuha, wa kulla muhdathatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dalalah, wa kulla dalalatin fin-nar.
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,
We Are Not Here Just for Ourselves
Brothers and sisters, Islam does not allow us to live in comfortable isolation — praying in our homes, earning our livelihood, and ignoring what happens around us. We have a collective responsibility towards the society we live in.
The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, gave a powerful parable:
"The likeness of the one who stands at the limits of Allah and the one who transgresses them is like people who drew lots on a ship — some got the upper deck and some the lower. Those below, when they needed water, would have to pass by those above. So they said: 'Let us make a hole in our part so we don't bother those above.' If the people above leave them to do what they want, they will all drown. But if they stop them, they will all be saved." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 2493)
We are all on the same ship. If we see wrong and do nothing, we all sink together.
Areas of Collective Responsibility
1. Social welfare. Food banks, shelters, supporting the vulnerable — these are Islamic obligations, not optional extras. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"He is not a believer who eats his fill while his neighbour beside him goes hungry." (As-Sunan al-Kubra, al-Bayhaqi, 19049; graded Sahih by al-Albani in Silsilah as-Sahihah, 149)
2. Education. Investing in schools, youth programmes, and community education — not just Islamic studies, but equipping our community to contribute to every field.
3. Justice and advocacy. Speaking out against injustice — whether it affects Muslims or non-Muslims. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, praised the pre-Islamic Hilf al-Fudul (Alliance of the Virtuous) — a pact to support the oppressed — and said: "If I were invited to it in Islam, I would accept." (As-Sunan al-Kubra, al-Bayhaqi, 12859; graded by Ibn Hajar as having good chains)
4. Environmental stewardship. We are khulafa (stewards) on this earth. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:
"If the Hour is about to be established and one of you has a seedling in his hand, if he is able to plant it before the Hour comes, let him plant it." (Musnad Ahmad, 12981 — graded Sahih by al-Albani)
Aqulu qauli hada, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum wa li sa'iril muslimeen, fas taghfiruh, innahu huwal Ghafurur Rahim.
Part Two — Second Khutbah
Bismillah, wal hamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.
Brothers and sisters,
Your Takeaway — Two Actions This Week
First: Volunteer for a cause that benefits the wider community — not just Muslims. Join a food bank, a charity walk, a neighbourhood clean-up. Let people see Muslims as givers, not just takers.
Second: Have a conversation with your family about what your collective contribution to society is. Are you just consuming — or are you also producing? Are you just benefiting — or are you also contributing? The Muslim community should be a net positive force in every society it inhabits.
(Aal 'Imran, 3:104)
"And let there be from you a nation inviting to good, enjoining right, and forbidding wrong."
Closing Du'a
Allahumma a'izzal islama wal muslimeen.
Allahumma irham al-muslimeena fee kulli makaan.
Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.
Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba'da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab.
Aqimis-salah.
