Summary

True sacrifice means giving up what we love for the sake of Allah. This khutbah explores the concept of sacrifice in Islam.

Part One — First Khutbah

Opening — Khutbat al-Hajah

Man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah.

Amma ba'd. Fa inna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khayral hadyi hadyu Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa sharral umuri muhdathatuha, wa kulla muhdathatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dalalah, wa kulla dalalatin fin-nar.

Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,

The Greatest Test — Ibrahim's Sacrifice

Brothers and sisters, sacrifice is at the very heart of our faith. Islam does not promise ease — it promises reward for struggle. And the greatest example of sacrifice in human history belongs to Ibrahim, 'alayhis salam.

Allah tested Ibrahim with a test that would break most people — to sacrifice his own son:

"Falamma balagha ma'ahus-sa'ya qala ya bunayya innee ara fil-manami annee adhbahuka fandhur madha tara. Qala ya abatif'al ma tu'maru satajidunee in sha'Allahu minas-sabireen." (As-Saffat, 37:102)
"And when he reached with him the age of exertion, he said: O my son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you, so see what you think. He said: O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast."

Both father and son submitted to Allah completely. Ibrahim was willing to give up the thing he loved most. And Isma'il, 'alayhis salam — still a youth — responded with such faith and maturity that it brings tears to the eyes.

And what was the result? Allah replaced the sacrifice with a ram and declared:

"Wa fadaynaahu bi dhibhin 'adheem." (As-Saffat, 37:107)
"And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice."

The lesson: Allah does not want the thing itself. He wants to see if you are willing to give it. When you pass the test, He replaces what you gave up with something far better.

Sacrifice in Our Daily Lives

We may not be asked to sacrifice our children, but we are asked to sacrifice daily:

- Our time — for salah, for learning, for community service.
- Our wealth — for zakah, sadaqah, and supporting those in need.
- Our comfort — waking for Fajr, fasting in long summer days, standing for what is right when it is unpopular.
- Our desires — saying no to haram even when it is easy and accessible.

Allah says:

"Lan tanalul-birra hatta tunfiqu mimma tuhibboon." (Aal 'Imran, 3:92)
"You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love."

This ayah is not just about money. It is about giving up whatever you are attached to for the sake of Allah — your free time, your social status, your personal preferences.

The Sacrifice of the Sahabah

The Companions of the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, understood this deeply. Bilal, radhiAllahu 'anhu, was tortured on the burning sands of Makkah and refused to renounce Islam. Sumayyah, radhiAllahu 'anha, was the first martyr — she gave her life.

The Muhajirun left their homes, their properties, their families — everything — for the sake of Allah. Abu Bakr, radhiAllahu 'anhu, gave every penny he had. When the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, asked him: "What did you leave for your family?" He replied: "I left them Allah and His Messenger." (Sunan Abu Dawud, 1678; Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 3675)

These were people who understood that nothing in this dunya is worth holding onto if it comes at the expense of your akhirah.
Aqulu qauli hada, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum wa li sa'iril muslimeen, fas taghfiruh, innahu huwal Ghafurur Rahim.

Part Two — Second Khutbah

Bismillah, wal hamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.

Brothers and sisters,

Your Takeaway — Two Actions This Week

First: Identify one thing you are holding onto that is preventing you from getting closer to Allah — it could be a bad habit, a toxic relationship, an attachment to luxury, excessive time on social media. Make a conscious sacrifice this week. Give it up — or take a step towards giving it up — for the sake of Allah.

Second: Give a sadaqah that you actually feel. Not spare change, but an amount that makes you pause. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:

"Ma naqasat sadaqatun min mal." (Sahih Muslim, 2588)
"Charity does not decrease wealth."

Give from what you love, and trust that Allah will replace it with what is better.

"Innallahash-tara minal-mu'mineena anfusahum wa amwalahum bi anna lahumul-jannah." (At-Tawbah, 9:111)
"Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties in exchange for Paradise."

What a trade. What a deal. May Allah make us among those who give generously in His path.

Closing Du'a

Allahumma a'izzal islama wal muslimeen.

Allahumma irham al-muslimeena fee kulli makaan.

Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.

Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba'da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab.

Aqimis-salah.
