Summary

Death is certain, but our preparation for it is often neglected. This khutbah is a wake-up call to prepare for the meeting with Allah.

Part One — First Khutbah

Opening — Khutbat al-Hajah

Man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah.

Amma ba'd. Fa inna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khayral hadyi hadyu Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa sharral umuri muhdathatuha, wa kulla muhdathatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dalalah, wa kulla dalalatin fin-nar.

Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,

The One Certainty We All Share

Brothers and sisters, there is one appointment that every single person in this room will keep — without exception, without delay, without the ability to cancel or reschedule:

"Kullu nafsin dha'iqatul-mawt. Wa innama tuwaffawna ujurakum yawmal-qiyamah." (Aal 'Imran, 3:185)
"Every soul will taste death. And you will only be given your full compensation on the Day of Resurrection."

Death does not discriminate. It takes the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the healthy and the sick. And it comes without warning.

The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:

"Akthiru dhikra hadhimil-ladhdhat." (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 2307; Sunan an-Nasa'i, 1824 — graded Sahih by al-Albani)
"Remember often the destroyer of pleasures." — meaning death.

Not to be morbid — but to be prepared.

What Happens After Death?

The akhirah is not vague or theoretical. The Quran and Sunnah describe it in detail:

The grave — either a garden from the gardens of Jannah or a pit from the pits of Jahannam. (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 2460 — graded Hasan by al-Albani) Three questions will be asked: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is this man (the Prophet)?

The Resurrection — when all of creation will be gathered on one plain, standing before Allah.

The Scales — every deed will be weighed. Not a single atom's weight will be missed.

The Bridge (Sirat) — stretched over the Hellfire. People will cross it according to their deeds — some like lightning, some crawling, and some falling.

The Final Destination — either eternal Paradise or eternal punishment. There is no third option.

Are We Preparing?

Brothers and sisters, if you knew you had a job interview tomorrow, you would prepare tonight. If you had an exam next week, you would study. Yet the greatest exam of our existence — standing before Allah — receives almost no preparation from most of us.

The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:

"Whoever fears (the journey) sets out early, and whoever sets out early reaches his destination. Indeed the merchandise of Allah is costly. Indeed the merchandise of Allah is Paradise." (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 2450 — graded Hasan by al-Albani)

Start early. Don't wait until you are on your deathbed to prepare for the meeting with your Lord.
Aqulu qauli hada, wa astaghfirullaha li wa lakum wa li sa'iril muslimeen, fas taghfiruh, innahu huwal Ghafurur Rahim.

Part Two — Second Khutbah

Bismillah, wal hamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam.

Brothers and sisters,

Your Takeaway — Two Actions This Week

First: Write your will (wasiyyah) if you haven't already. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:

"It is not right for a Muslim who has anything to bequeath to sleep two nights without having his will written down." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 2738; Sahih Muslim, 1627)

Prepare for death practically — your will, your debts, your affairs.

Second: Visit a graveyard this week. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said:

"I had forbidden you from visiting graves, but now visit them — for they remind you of the Hereafter." (Sahih Muslim, 977)

Stand among the graves. Read Al-Fatihah. Reflect. Remember that you will be there one day. Then go home and live like someone who knows his time is short.

Closing Du'a

Allahumma a'izzal islama wal muslimeen.

Allahumma irham al-muslimeena fee kulli makaan.

Allahumma a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.

Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba'da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal Wahhab.

Aqimis-salah.
